Mobility scooters in Ireland: buy or hire?
If you need a scooter for a few weeks after an operation, hiring is usually the better value. If it is becoming part of daily life, buying wins quickly. Here is how to decide.
When hire makes sense
Recovery from surgery, a broken ankle, a visit from a relative, or a summer of days out. Our local hire is €25 a week with a €100 damage deposit that is refunded in full when the scooter comes back in good order.
We service and maintain the scooter for the whole hire period, so there is nothing to organise if something goes wrong.
When buying makes sense
If mobility needs are permanent or slowly increasing, buying is cheaper within a few months and the scooter is set up exactly for the user — seat height, tiller angle and speed limits all dialled in.
Boot size and folding
The biggest practical question is whether it has to go in a car. Folding and travel scooters break down into pieces one person can lift; larger road-style scooters do not, and need a ramp or a permanent home.
Range, batteries and charging
Manufacturer ranges assume flat ground and a light rider. In hilly parts of Cavan and Monaghan plan for roughly two thirds of the quoted figure, and charge every night rather than waiting for a low battery.
