Are dirt bikes and quads road legal in Ireland?

Off-road dirt bikes and pit bikes have no lights, indicators, mirrors, horn, registration or type approval, so they cannot be taxed or insured for use on Irish public roads. That includes public footpaths, laneways open to the public, and car parks with public access.

Riding is legal on private land where you have the landowner's permission — your own field, a family farm, or a dedicated track. Always ask first, and be mindful of livestock, crops and neighbours.

A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable. Gloves, boots that cover the ankle, and goggles come next, with a body armour vest for younger riders learning on rough ground.

Keep an adult present for young riders, use the throttle limiter for the first few outings, and set a clear boundary in the field so speed builds gradually.
